EGALITARIAN

A group of professors and first-year students from the Master’s Degree in Industrial Engineering and Management participated in the 2nd Edition of the EGALITARIAN Project, which took place from 26 to 30 August in Denmark.
In addition to the University of Minho, the EGALITARIAN project, funded by the European Commission (ERASMUS+), involves three other universities:

Saxion University of Applied Sciences in the Netherlands, University of Brasília (Brazil) and Aalborg University (Denmark), where the event took place.
Rui M. Lima is the project coordinator and emphasises “the potential that this experience brings to the training of engineering students, as they have the opportunity to work in teams that, in addition to integrating different areas of knowledge, bring together people from different countries. Furthermore, working on real problems makes a difference, something that we have been focusing on in the DPS training programme”.

The aim of EGALITARIAN is to promote collaboration between students from different countries through real projects whose solutions improve the work and lives of waste collectors in Brasília.
The University of Minho was represented in this second edition by eight first-year students from the Master’s in Industrial Engineering and Management (MEGI): Bárbara Silva, Mariana Carvalho, Ana Luísa Machado, Raquel Dantas, Beatriz Silva, Francisca Nunes, Inês Araújo and Dinis Júnior.
During the first semester of 2024/25, these students will work on a project focused on measuring and reducing the carbon footprint and solid waste produced by companies.

This edition also features Professor Rui M. Lima and Professor Rui M. Sousa from the Department of Production and Systems, as well as Erik Lopes, a PhD student from the Doctoral Programme in Industrial Engineering and Systems (PDEIS).

EGALITARIAN

A team of lecturers and eight students from the Department of Production and Systems at the School of Engineering of the University of Minho participated in the Waste Summit Brasília 2024 during the week of 22 to 26 January.

This week, students from four countries (Denmark, the Netherlands, Portugal, and Brazil) worked in multidisciplinary teams to plan a project capable of providing solutions to improve the lives and work of waste pickers in Brasília. Upon returning, the students will become ambassadors for the project at their home institutions, with the aim of developing it throughout the semester.

Rui M. Lima is the project coordinator and emphasises “the innovative nature of this initiative, in that we have teams of students working in international and intercultural environments to develop proposals for real problems that will contribute directly to the Sustainable Development Goals”.

The University of Minho is represented by a group of first-year students from the Master’s Degree in Engineering and Operations Management (MEGO) and by professors Rui M. Lima and Anabela Alves from the Department of Production and Systems.

The Waste Summit Brasília 2024 was the first event of the ERASMUS+ EGALITARIAN project – Education, Digitalisation and Collaboration for Sustainability – funded by the European Commission and coordinated by Aalborg University, Denmark, a leading institution in Problem & Project Based Learning. In addition to the University of Minho, this project has as partners Saxion University (Netherlands) and the University of Brasília (host of the event).
