FILIPE ALVELOS RECEIVES THE ISABEL THEMIDO AWARD 2025
Filipe Alvelos, researcher at the Algoritmi Centre and professor at the School of Engineering of the University of Minho (EEUM), was awarded the Isabel Themido Prize 2025 for the best article published by members of the Portuguese Association for Operational Research (APDIO) in 2022, 2023 and 2024. The ceremony took place at the 24th APDIO Congress, held from 7 to 9 September 2025, in Amarante.
The professor from the Department of Production and Systems at EEUM, together with André Bergsten from the University of São Paulo (Brazil), co-authored the award-winning article ‘Iterated local search for the placement of wildland fire suppression resources’, which was published in the European Journal of Operational Research. The results of the study can help organisations apply forecasting and modelling technologies in large-scale firefighting scenarios or in the management of associated risks.
