Industrial Engineering and Management in Portugal: pathways, convergences and futures

The programme marking the 50th anniversary of the Department of Production and Systems at the University of Minho’s School of Engineering has officially begun — celebrating a history characterised by innovation, strong links with industry and a pioneering role in the teaching of Industrial Engineering and Management in Portugal.

The session began with a brief historical overview of the DPS, presented by Celina Pinto Leão, followed by the official opening by Paulo Sampaio (Director of the DPS) and a speech by Joana Cunha (Vice-President of EENG). The round-table discussion ‘Engineering and Industrial Management in Portugal: paths, convergences and futures’ was moderated by Anabela Alves and Carina Pimentel, providing a fruitful opportunity for the guests to share their views and reflect: Joaquim Borges Gouveia (University of Aveiro), 𝗝𝗼𝘀é 𝗔𝗻𝘁ó𝗻𝗶𝗼 𝗖𝗮𝗯𝗿𝗮𝗹 (APGEI), José Fernando Oliveira (Faculty of Engineering, University of Porto), 𝗠𝗮𝗱𝗮𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗮 𝗔𝗿𝗮ú𝗷𝗼 (University of Minho), Susana Relvas (Instituto Superior Técnico) and Virgílio Cruz Machado (Faculty of Science and Technology, NOVA University Lisbon), as well as the participants in this event.

Also worth highlighting was the excellent musical performance, led by a wind quartet made up of students from the ELACH Department of Music, with special thanks to Professor Vítor Matos.

The celebrations will continue until December, including alumni and staff gatherings, initiatives involving businesses and students, co-creation sessions and the launch of the book “50 Years of Production and Systems”.
